What to Wear on a Helicopter Tour: The Complete Guide
A helicopter flight is not a formal occasion, but the right clothing makes a big difference to your comfort and your photos. Here is the full checklist.
Clothing: Layers and Dark Colours
The cabin is climate-controlled, but the helipad is not. Wear layers so you can adjust — a light jacket or jumper you can take off in the cabin is ideal. Dark-coloured clothing is better for photography because it reduces reflections in the windows and the cabin glass. Avoid bright white or fluorescent colours if you plan to take photos through the windows.
Comfort matters more than style. You will be sitting for the duration of the flight, and you will need to board and exit the helicopter using a step. Wear comfortable clothing you can move in — jeans, chinos, or casual trousers are perfect.
Footwear: Closed-Toe Shoes
Closed-toe shoes are mandatory on all helicopter flights — no thongs, sandals, or high heels. The helipad is a working airfield, and you need sturdy footwear to board safely. Sneakers, boots, or flat shoes are all fine. High heels can damage the helicopter skids and are not permitted.
If you are flying to a winery lunch, smart-casual shoes are appropriate for the venue — but they must still be closed-toe and flat.
Accessories: Sunglasses and a Hat
Sunglasses are essential — the glare from the water and the city can be intense, especially on scenic flights over Port Phillip Bay or the coastline. A hat is useful on the helipad but must be secured or removed before boarding — loose hats can blow away in the rotor wash and are a safety hazard near the aircraft.
If you wear glasses or contact lenses, wear them as normal. The headset fits over glasses comfortably.
What Not to Wear or Bring
Do not bring loose items that can blow away — scarves, hats, and loose papers should be secured or left on the ground. Phone cameras are fine, but large DSLR cameras with long lenses may be restricted depending on the aircraft — check with us when booking. Food and drink are not permitted in the cabin on scenic flights.
For proposal and wedding flights, smart-casual or formal attire is perfectly fine — just ensure your shoes are flat and closed-toe.
